Camp Adair

Camp Objectives

  • To enhance learning through a variety of well-designed, first hand, positive experiences

  • To act as an important stimulus for individual and social development

  • To increase student awareness that different branches of learning are interrelated

  • To increase students’ and adults’ awareness and application of safe practice in the outdoors

  • To increase students’ understanding and concern for the environment

  • To help learners develop self-confidence and a sense of adventure

  • To teach students leisure, life and work skills

  • To develop an attitude of responsibility

As these objectives target building confidence, team building skills and a host of important virtues and skills we make it a compulsory experience for all.


Curriculum Links

The principles of the NZ Curriculum are embedded into each school’s own curriculum and part of that approach happens outside the classroom.

  • 2 or 3 pairs track pants/trousers for evenings
  • 4 pairs shorts
  • Pyjamas
  • Raincoat
  • 5 or 6 T-shirts/tops
  • 2 pair of comfortable shoes (one pair will get wet and muddy so have an old pair)
  • Underwear
  • Swimwear
  • Socks - several pairs
  • Slippers for use in dorms
  • 2 Warm Jerseys/polar fleeces
  • Sun-hat/cap
  • Warm hat/beanie
  • At least 2 pairs of sneakers/closed shoes
  • Togs - must be appropriate for the mudslide                  
  •  3 tea towels
  • 2 Shower towels
  • 1 Beach towel
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect spray
  • Blindfold
  • Any required medication in a labelled bag with instructions
  • plastic bags for dirty laundry
  • Torch with fresh batteries

  • Camera (disposable recommended) - CANNOT BE A PHONE OR IPAD.


You must bring a container of home baking for morning teas (or 2 packets of bought biscuits).These will be shared around.Make sure the container is clearly labelled with the type of baking and include a list of ingredients.


I-pod, I-phones, PSP’s, mp3 players, money, cellphone, extra food. NO DEVICES AT ALL

*Closed shoes must be worn for all activities, and one pair may get wet on the confidence course so 2 are essential.

*There is limited space on the busses for luggage so make sure your bag is not too big and don’t bring more than you need. You must be able to carry all of your own gear.

First day of camp 

Meet in front of all with all gear by 8:15am (parents please park out the front of the school or on the top courts if staying to see your child off to camp)
Line up in front of your teacher with all your gear.
Have home baking separate as it will be handed to the teacher when you get to school
Have medication out and in a clear zip-lock bag - must be clearly named with any medication named and all instructions on administration included - take this to the medic when you get to the school in the morning (before lining up with your teacher)
Let your teacher know you are there and make sure you are marked as present. 

Last day of camp

We aim to be back to school around 2:30 on the last day of the camp (traffic dependent)
(parents please park out the front of the school or on the top courts if you are picking your child up)
If students need to catch the school bus or some other arrangements for pick up need to be made, please make sure you arrange this with your child before hand, so that they know what to do when they arrive back at school. Students should all be ready to go home by the end of the normal school day. 
Please make sure that students have packed EVERYTHING listed on the equipment lis
Please make sure home baking and medication is not packed in main bag, they need to be handed to teachers on arrival at school. 
Please make sure students do not bring ay technology with them, it will be confiscated if found, and returned at the end of camp.

Camp - Written by Mariel

"I climbed up the shaky tall building and my hands shook with every step I took. My team encouraged me, I climbed on. The sun was shining brightly and it suddenly felt hot. The harness was tugging on my waist, annoying me with every step I climbed. I reached the top and I nervously climbed on the miniature wooden box. My team shouted:
“1, 2, 3…”
I jumped off. I felt a rush go through me when I flew through space. I conquered my fear when I pushed myself to go higher."

The Mudslide - Written by Shyla

“I’m going to get you back”
I was covered with mud from head to toe.
“No Rani wait…”
It was too late. She dumped a giant pile of chocolate brown mud on top of of my head. It trickled down my face, falling to my toes.
“Time for a rinse off!”
I stepped onto the slippery black mat, took a run up, then zoomed off! Following the cold water, faster and faster.
But then came trouble in paradise. The end was approaching. I took a deep breath and… “SPLASH!” The ice-cold muddy water blanketed me. I waited for the other 10 chickens to come so that we could take a group photo. The daylight gifted us the perfect lighting. I weaved through the water trying to get out of the freezing pool. Mud squished through my toes every step I took. Then suddenly felt another squishy dump of mud onto my back.
“I guess now I have to go down again.”
That was by far the best camp activity!

The high beam! - Written by Neha

I waited for the person to come down. My stomach was growing butterflies. “Go, it’s your turn”.
“Up 1, up 2, up 3, up 4, up 5, I climbed.
I stood at the top shaking like a loose spring. My team mates cheered me on.
The sun shone on my back while I walked on the log in fear. I went to the end and came back to the middle. I touched my toes and stood on one leg trying really hard not to look down. I leaned back and the strong ropes held me. I pushed back. I fell to the ground without hurting myself and I was proud.
“PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me do it again” I said as I took of my helmet in joy. This was my best experience at camp. I was excited and proud of myself.
