Overarching question:  How can the relationships we make impact our future?

Through exploring this year's fertile question, students will develop critical thinking skills, communication skills, emotional intelligence as well as questioning and problem-solving skills.

Relationships: 

  • Everything is related in some way
  • Are powerful
  • Change over time
  • Have rules
  • Are everywhere
  • Can bring about change
  • Can be simple or complex 
  • May have positive and negative effects 
  • Can be natural, forced, or chosen 
  • are connections.

Rationale:

Our mental health and personal well being are tied up in the quality of our personal relationships.

The more closely we are connected the happier we feel and the more personal satisfaction we have in our lives. 

Relationships not only include family and personal friends but also the wider groups and communities we belong to. Forming connections and a sense of community with our peers, neighbours and the various groups that make up our identity (such as sports, hobbies, religious and community groups), all contribute to our well-being. 

Forming a sense of belonging with other people around a shared mission or identity is a major contributor to our sense of personal meaning in life. Our personal resilience is interwoven into resilience of the communities to which we belong. 

It is from the web of our relationships and connections with other people that we draw our strength. Such communities can lift us when we are down and give us the capacity to deal with whatever challenges come our way.  


The focus for each term: 

Term 1: What relationships have made the biggest differences in our lives?

As students start new academic year building relationships between students in their class, their whanau and with their teachers is vitally important. Students will discover the diverse cultures in Mansfield and around New Zealand.  Students will undertake a study into the different character strengths that are the positive parts of your personality that impact how you think, feel, and behave. Through the discovery of their personality strengths, they will be able to support one another at camp. 

Term 2: How have relationships shaped who we are today?

Students will compare current relationships and past relationships, what makes great relationships and how they can change over time. We will be investigating relationships between. Students will look at how transport has change over time and the relationships that form through trade.

Term 3: What changes can we make for a better future?

Students will recognise instances of discrimination and act responsibly to support their own rights and feelings and those of other people.  Students will develop empathy, accept and celebrate differences, and learn to develop communication skills. 

Term 4: How can we change the relationships we have for the better?

This term students will undertake a social action. Students will undertake a personal project which will encourage them to listen effectively, give people their time and support others through building relationships.
